A candle is sold on scent but scent can’t travel through a screen or a shop shelf. Until a customer lights the wick, your box does all the selling: it signals the price point, tells your brand story and keeps a fragile glass jar in one piece on the way to their door.
That’s a lot of work for a piece of cardboard, which is why the right packaging matters as much as the right fragrance oil. Get it wrong and you pay twice in broken jars and in candles that look cheaper than they are.
In this guide, our packaging team walks you through everything candle makers ask us before ordering: which box style suits jars, tins and pillars, how to size the box, how to protect candles in transit, which finishes are worth paying for, and what drives the cost of custom candle boxes. CustomPackBox makes custom packaging boxes for candle brands from first batch to wholesale scale, so every tip here comes from real production runs.
Why Custom Candle Packaging Is Worth It
- It sets your price point. The same 8 oz soy candle can sell at a budget or a boutique price the box is often what tells the customer which.
- It protects glass. A box sized to your jar, with an insert, stops the movement that cracks jars and chips lids.
- It makes the candle giftable. Candles are among the most popular gifts. A finished box means the buyer doesn’t need wrapping paper and that wins sales in Q4.
- It carries the information buyers look for. Scent notes, burn time, wax type and safety warnings all need a home that isn’t crammed onto a jar label.
6 Candle Box Styles (and Which One Fits Your Candle)
| Box style | Best for | Look and feel | Ships on its own? |
| Reverse tuck end folding carton | Jar and tin candles sold in retail | Clean, affordable, prints in full color | No — pack in a shipper |
| Window tuck box | Pillar and colored-wax candles | Shows the candle through a die-cut window | No |
| Sleeve and tray (drawer) box | Gift sets, mid-premium jars | Slide-out reveal | No |
| Two-piece rigid box (lid and base) | Luxury candles, gift sets | Heavy, premium, keepsake | No |
| Magnetic closure rigid box | High-end and limited-edition candles | The most premium unboxing | No |
| Corrugated mailer box | Online orders and candle subscriptions | Branded inside and out | Yes |
Our rule of thumb: sell in stores → a folding carton or rigid candle boxes for premium lines. Sell online → a printed corrugated mailer with an insert, or a folding carton packed inside a plain shipper. Many brands use both: a retail carton on the shelf, and the same carton inside a branded mailer for e-commerce.
How to Size a Custom Candle Box
A box that’s too loose lets the jar rattle; too tight and it scuffs labels or won’t close. Follow these steps.
- Measure the widest point of the vessel, usually the jar’s shoulder or the lid rim not the base.
- Measure the full height with the lid on. Include wooden lids, dust covers and any wick that stands above the rim.
- Add clearance. For a snug folding carton, add about 1/16–1/8 inch (1.5–3 mm) to the width and depth. If you’re adding an insert, size the box around the insert instead.
- Give inside dimensions (length × width × depth) when you request a quote. Box makers quote by inside size, so outer dimensions will lead to a box that’s too small.
- Order a blank sample first and test it with a real filled candle before approving the print.
How to Protect Candles in Shipping
Breakage is the biggest hidden cost in candle e-commerce. Three layers of protection prevent most of it.
- Use an insert. A die-cut cardboard insert holds the jar in the center so it can’t hit the box walls. For gift sets, corrugated partitions keep jars from knocking into each other. Our custom box inserts are made in the same order as your boxes.
- Choose the right board. Paperboard cartons are for display. For shipping, use corrugated E-flute or B-flute, or pack the carton inside a corrugated shipper with a little void fill.
- Plan for heat. Wax can soften in hot delivery vans in summer. Use a snug insert so a softened candle doesn’t tilt, and consider adding a “keep cool” note on the shipper during hot months.
Before you scale, run a simple test: pack a candle exactly as a customer will receive it, then drop the box from waist height onto each face and corner. If the jar survives, your packaging is ready.
Materials and Finishes for Candle Boxes
Materials
- SBS (white) paperboard — the brightest print colors; the standard for retail folding cartons.
- Kraft paperboard — natural and earthy; ideal for soy, beeswax and eco brands. See kraft candle boxes.
- Corrugated board — the strongest choice for shipping and subscription candles.
- Rigid chipboard — thick board wrapped in printed or textured paper, used for luxury candle boxes.
Finishes worth paying for
- Soft-touch or matte lamination — a velvety feel that reads as premium.
- Foil stamping — gold, copper or silver on your logo; it shines on black and dark boxes.
- Embossing or debossing — a raised or pressed logo you can feel.
- Spot UV — gloss on one element against a matte background.
- Inside printing — a scent story, a burn guide or a thank-you note revealed when the box opens.
Pick one or two finishes and use them on your logo. Finishes on everything cost more and look less special.
What to Print on Your Candle Box
Your box has more space than your jar label. Use it to answer buyers’ questions before they ask.
- Brand name and candle name
- Scent notes (top, middle, base) and a short mood description
- Wax type, wick type and net weight
- Approximate burn time
- Candle safety warnings in the US, many retailers expect labeling based on the ASTM F2058 candle safety standard
- Website, social handle or a QR code to reorder
- Barcode, if you sell through retailers
Labeling rules vary by country and retailer, so confirm requirements with your stockists before you print.
How Much Do Custom Candle Boxes Cost?
Price per box depends mostly on six things.
| Factor | What raises the price | How to save |
| Quantity | Small runs | Order a full season of boxes at once |
| Style | Rigid and magnetic boxes | Folding cartons for everyday lines |
| Size | Large or multi-candle sets | Fit the box tightly to the jar |
| Printing | Full color inside and out | One side, or fewer colors |
| Finishes | Foil, embossing, soft-touch | One accent finish on the logo |
| Inserts | Multi-cavity or foam inserts | Simple die-cut cardboard inserts |
Quantity has the biggest effect. Printing plates and cutting dies are a one-time setup, so the cost is spread across your order which is why candle boxes ordered wholesale cost far less per unit than small reorders. A smart move for growing brands: use one box size and design across several scents, and change a sticker or printed band for each fragrance.

FAQs About Custom Candle Boxes
What is the best packaging for candles?
For retail, a printed folding carton or a rigid box sized to the jar. For shipping, a corrugated mailer with a cardboard insert. Many brands combine both: a retail carton packed inside a branded mailer.
How do I ship candles without breaking them?
Hold the jar in a snug insert so it can’t move, use corrugated board rather than thin paperboard for the outer box, and do a drop test before launch.
What size box do I need for an 8 oz candle?
It depends on the jar, not the wax weight; two 8 oz jars can have very different shapes. Measure the widest point and full height with the lid on, then add about 1/16–1/8 inch clearance.
Can I get personalized candle boxes in small quantities?
Yes. Digital printing makes short runs possible, so new candle brands can order personalized candle boxes without buying thousands up front. Our minimum starts at 100 MOQ.
Are kraft candle boxes eco-friendly?
Kraft paperboard and corrugated boxes are recyclable and often made with recycled fiber. Pair them with cardboard inserts instead of foam for fully recyclable packaging.
Can I use one box for all my scents?
Yes, and it’s the easiest way to save. Print one shared design, then add a scent sticker, a printed band or a color-coded label for each fragrance.
